The crop system allows players to plant, grow, and harvest 73 different types of crops. Many of these crops are used in the extended cooking system as ingredients. In order to get started, you will need to purchase a garden plot add-on deed from either the gardener in Lord British's castle or the winecrafter in Ye Olde Winery in Yew. The deed is placeable inside your house or yard. Once a garden is placed, you can plant crop seeds by double clicking them while standing on a garden add-on dirt tile. After planting a seed, a seedling or sapling will start to grow. Repeatedly double clicking on a seedling will cause you to uproot it. If left alone, the seedling will eventually grow into a mature plant. After maturing, the plant will begin to bear harvestable crops. There is also a chance that a weed will grow instead of a mature plant.
A handful of crop seeds are available from the gardener; the rest will need to be taken from seed carrying NPCs. There are four groups of seed carrying NPCs throughout the world, each with their own specific seed types. They are:
- Brigands in a camp west of Britain.
- Trappers in a camp northeast of Vesper.
- Outcasts on Bald Island.
- Outlaws on Buccaneer's Den Island.
